Coalition to make imminent decision on Biloela family’s future as hopes grow of return to mainland

Deputy PM signals plan to reunite Murugappan family in Perth where Tharnicaa is in hospital, as dismay at family’s plight grows within government ranks

A government decision on the fate of the Murugappan family is “imminent” with expectation mounting that they will be removed from the Christmas Island detention centre and reunited on the mainland as early as Tuesday.

Amid calls growing for the Tamil family to be allowed to return to the Queensland town of Biloela, including from within Coalition ranks, the deputy prime minister Michael McCormack said on Monday that the immigration minister, Alex Hawke, would make an announcement this week.
