As the sun rose on 26 January, thousands gathered in the rain and cold to pay tribute to elders, past and present, at the annual Invasion Day vigils.

Physically distanced crowds gathered in Barangaroo Reserve in Sydney from dusk until dawn to reflect on the impact of colonisation, and celebrate what life was like for Indigenous communities before the First Fleet arrived.

School climate strikes have resumed in New Zealand, with young people calling on the government to turn the “can-do Kiwi attitude” that beat Covid-19 towards tackling the climate emergency.

A group of about 200 taking part in the School Strike 4 Climate NZ gathered outside parliament on Tuesday afternoon to present a group of politicians with a list of demands for “transformative action” on the climate crisis within the government’s first 100 days.

A row has broken out over accusations that a New York Times journalist was fired after being targeted by rightwing critics for tweeting she had “chills” at seeing Joe Biden’s plane land at Joint Base Andrews.

Lauren Wolfe, who had been working as an editor at the Times, posted the message on 19 January, as Biden arrived ahead of his inauguration as president the next day.
