Democrats were on the verge of striking a deal on Friday evening that would pave the way for the House to pass a $1.2tn infrastructure bill after months of delays, delivering Joe Biden a long awaited legislative victory on his domestic agenda.
The apparent breakthrough came after a chaotic day on Capitol Hill that began with high hopes that Democratic lawmakers could advance the two central pillars of the president’s economic vision. But their ambitions were quickly dashed amid resistance from a small handful of moderate holdouts who forced party leaders to postpone a final vote on the larger spending package.
