Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's ill-advised decision to involve the US in the dam negotiations has come back to bite him and the country. A Foreign Policy report published today says Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has approved a plan to halt nearly 130 million USD in annual assistance to Ethiopia. This would not have happened if Abiy hadn't accepted the involvement of the US in the dam negotiations in the meeting he had with El-Sisi in Sochi, Russia. Relations between Ethiopia and the US have become increasingly sour not just as a result of the dam dispute but due to the fact that Ethiopia has slid back into authoritarian rule, much to the consternation of members of congress. Only this week, the Prime Minister's request to meet with Pompeo in Khartoum was flat-out rejected by the US Department of State.
